There is one race course but there are three different races taking part. Astra is eligible for two of these races. Here are the official race results for these two races:
|South Bay Family Sailing Series (SBFSS) September 16, 2017 (7.24 nm)||San Diego Sail and Power Squadron|
|Saturday, September 16, 2017 was a wonderful day for sailing. There was some early morning overcast, but it was a welcome relief from the heat we have been having in the east county recently. The wind was light when we left the dock and all on the boat discussed it might be a long slow race. The tide was going to be slack at 1300 so it would not be much of a factor in the race. By the noon horn the wind had filled in slightly and was a constant 6-8 knots from the usual position in the NW.
Eight boats were circling around the starting line. Marilee, Astra, ATSA II, Bon Temps, Bibbity Bobbity Boat, Makai, a “No Name” Hunter 26 and our old friend Phryxus. Phryxus is a small fast boat sailed by Doug who sails out of the Chula Vista Yacht Club. On regular occasions he beats Marilee, Bon Temps and a host of other boats especially in light winds. This was the perfect day for Phryxus to beat everyone again.
At the noon horn the boats were off. Phryxus was first across the line followed closely by Marilee, Atsa II and then the rest of the fleet. Phryxus was doing well toward the first mark until the wind started picking up to 10-12 knots and Marilee was first to the initial mark. As the race progressed the wind increased to where there were gusts to 13 knots. Bon Temps moved into second place. Astra with a boat full of Sea Scouts, Phryxus, and Atsa II were fighting it out for third place.
Across the finish line first was Marilee, 13:20:30, Bon Temps 13:23:45, Astra 13:25:05, Phryxus 13:26:40, Atsa II 13:28:30, Makai 13:38:30, BBBoat 13:39:56 and the “No Name” Hunter 26 we did not see finish.
It was really a wonderful race and everyone had a great time. The entire south bay was entirely empty of boats The low clouds cleared away and there was beautiful sunshine. COME OUT NEXT MONTH and have some fun in your boat.
Putting all these numbers into the Mike Collins Family Handicap System the final results are: First: ATSA II, Second: Makai, Third: Phryxus, Fourth: Bon Temps, Fifth: Astra, Sixth: Marilee, Seventh: BB Boat.
Congratulations to all!
Phryxus welcome back, even though you beat us all regularly.
See you all next month: Saturday October 21, 2017
