Astra Race – October – 2nd place

It was one of the best days of sailing I have ever had.  Warm, sunny and sufficient wind between Noon and 2:00 pm.  Tides were outgoing at the start of the race and incoming at the end. There were 12 boats in  the starting area when the first group started at Noon.  The first group which included KISS,Blew By U, Miller Time III, Fast Sunday and Madam Wu gott off to a nice start and quickly made way to the first and second marks. The second group started at 12:05 and included ATSA II and Serendipity III.  The third starting group included RAN, Consigliere, Astra and Marilee.  RAN, Consigliere and Astra timed the start perfectly while Marilee crossed the starting line over two and a half minutes behind the rest of the big boats. We will chalk up the bad start on first time jitters and a Rookie Captain.

All of the boats followed a similar track to the second mark.  At that point, all the boats except Marilee tracked up the East side of the bay before tacking across to the B marker.  Marilee tacked to the west of the bay shortly after rounding the second mark and picked up significant time and ground on the rest of the fleet. It was a drag race to the B mark and the fleet closed ranks on the rounding of that mark. The rounding at R30 was quite crowded with many large and small boats in close proximity. On the reach between R30 and A, the fleet started to stretch out as we all raced to the finish.  Unfortunately, the wind died down after 2:00 pm with the incoming tide and extended the race for some of the boats.
