SDSPS Sail Fleet/South Bay Family Sailing Series/Ventura Sailing Club-December 15, 2018, Saturday (8.17nm)
Astra finished FOURTH!! See a full replay of the race HERE.
Saturday, December 15, 2018, what a fine day for a sail. Clear blue skies with some scattered high clouds to the south. Near the 12:00 start the winds were calm but the wind was starting to fill in from the NW. Some areas on the water were smooth as glass while others had patches with “Cats Paws” and dark water where the wind was just starting to blow. Wind was predicted to be around 9-10 knots from the west. Low tide was at 1000 with high tide at 1500. The tide would be coming in during the whole race. This might help on the final downwind leg.
Seven boats were circling the starting line for the noon horn. Group C, Group B and Group A were off and away on their respected start times to buoy B, our first mark. Boats present were Fast Sunday, Sea Story, Astra, Bon Temps, Pyrxus, Marilee, and a new boat, SeaDuctor.
We are happy to have you sailing with us.
The faster boats starting last in Group A and slowly pulled into the lead by the third mark with Marilee (47’) leading the pack. Slowly but surely Astra was gaining on the leader. On the final down wind leg things really got exciting and ended in a photo finish. Two captains were claiming honors for first across the finish line.
Thankfully everyone was running the software program-“raceQs” so they could observe the whole race. WOW, an excellent race.
First across the line honors go to Astra 13:31:58 followed by Marilee 13:32:25, Bon Temps 13:36:08, Pyrxus 13:38:40, Sea Story 13:52:03 and Fast Sunday 14:11:38, and Seaductor DNF.
Putting into the Collins Handicap system: First Place: Sea Story, Second Place: Fast Sunday, Third Place: Pyrxus followed by Astra, Marilee and Bon Temps.
